Media Analysis

I chose to analyse an interview of actress Julia Roberts in Vogue magazine by journalist and writer, Richard Curtis.

Curtis uses descriptive language to set the scene, exploring the history of his friendship with the actress and how they met. He then uses a ‘question and answer’ structure for the rest of the interview.

Since Richard Curtis has known Julia Roberts for over 20 years, the accuracy and detail of the interview are very high. This is because Roberts is comfortable in the presence of someone she refers to as a ‘friend’. However, this may affect the impartiality as a ‘friend’ may leave certain details out of the interview to avoid painting a negative image.

The interview’s ‘question-answer; structure makes it easily readable for audiences. Curtis also includes some light-hearted humor, allowing the audience to feel as though they relate to Julia Roberts, and get to know her better in the interview.

The title of the interview – ‘The Meet Cute: Julia Roberts Opens up to Richard Curtis about her rom-com Perfect Marriage, the Secret to aging gracefully, and why she almost turned down Notting Hill‘ – draws the reader in with phrases such as ‘the secret to aging gracefully’, something which may relate to the target audience of Vogue. Julia Robert’s lifestyle is also mentioned, a common category included in Vogue articles: celebrity lifestyle. Curtis also mentions a famous movie ‘Notting Hill’.
